In a bid to persuade people to go out and vote, Obama left the audience with a teary story "for the young people here."。

"When I ran for the presidency in '08 -- the truth is not a lot of people gave me a chance," he started off.

"I was a skinny guy with a funny name. When I look back at the pictures I look really young," he jokes, adding that "the odds just weren't for us." 。

But one episode made him change his mind, helping shift the outlook early in his campaign. 。

He recalls a long drive in the rain to a campaign event in Greenwood, South Carolina, where he had to meet 20 groggy supporters in order to keep a promise he made one month before.  。

One of the people, though, was a member of the local NAACP and a private detective who galvanised the group by saying "FIRED UP, READY TO GO" in a call-and-response riff. 。

The rest is history: 。

"It just goes to show you, how one voice can change a room. And if it can change a room, it can change a city. And if it can change a city, it can change a state. And if it can change a state, it can change a nation. And if it can change a nation, it can change the world." 。
