If you were hoping for closure from the Girlsseries finale, it didn't deliver much.
The episode, which starred only Hannah (Lena Dunham), Marnie (Allison Williams), and Hannah's mom (Becky Ann Baker), picked up just a few weeks after the birth of Hannah's baby, named Grover. (Yes, Grover.)
SEE ALSO:Tell your pal and a confidant: The 'Golden Girls' cafe is Instagram heavenWhile it seemed the foursome was breaking up for good, Marnie was determined to maintain her status as the best BFF and moved upstate to help Hannah raise the baby. But Marnie's reliance on baby books and general calm in the face of Hannah's panic didn't help enough, so she had to call in support from Hannah's mom (Becky Ann Baker).
And then it just kind of ... ended, leaving plenty of room to wonder what ultimately will happen to the four girls — Hannah, Marnie, Jessa (Jemima Kirke), and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) — and their male compatriots Adam (Adam Driver), Ray (Alex Karpovsky), and Elijah (Andrew Rannells).
Since the writers didn't tell us, here are a few attempts to figure out the Girls' future.
Where We Left Her: While Hannah deciding to keep her baby and raise him as a single mother seemed to prove that she'd taken a step away from her selfish nature and toward true adulthood, she regressed majorly. In the finale, after going on a completely hurtful and ungrateful tirade against her mother, Hannah ultimately realized mom was right all along (isn't it upsetting how your mom's advice is always pretty much right?), getting baby Grover to latch and breastfeed for real.
In a way, it's typical Hannah — every time she has a breakthrough, she regresses. But when you're responsible for another life, it's impossible to keep doing that forever. That's why it feels entirely possible for Hannah to truly become a good mother — or at least someone who is on her way to becoming one.
What's In Her Future: Maybe she'll date a bit, but she'll realize quickly that for a couple of years, at least, Grover will be the man who needs her most. Ultimately, Hannah will probably get involved with another academic at the university where she works, but she will find the country life unfulfilling and eventually move back to the city — or at least to the 'burbs.
Where We Left Her:Nothing if not loyal, Marnie proved her BFF-worthiness by moving upstate to help Hannah raise her son — except it was more out of obligation than a true desire to help her friend. Or maybe she really wanted to help Hannah, but didn't recognize that it was at the expense of her own happiness. Thanks to a chat with Hannah's mom, she realized she needed to figure out what she wanted.
What's In Her Future:While Marnie has tried out a few careers and dated a variety of guys, she's never found anything that really makes her happy. She's definitely going to Eat, Pray, Love it up in Europe before heading back and probably going to law school like she admitted to considering. She'll find herself, then realize she still does want to have an impressive career — the best of both worlds.
Where We Left Her: The last we saw of Jessa, she was doing the mature thing and apologizing to Hannah for the entire Adam situation. She recognized that the decisions she and the rest of the group had made throughout their friendship weren't always healthy ones, but she was ready to try and do the right thing in the future.
What's In Her Future:In the interest of keeping her sobriety (and beginning to make healthier friendship choices), Jessa will find a new group of friends — a less toxic, self-centered gang that supports each other rather than passive-aggressively competing against each other. True to Jemima Kirke's IRL talents, she'll become a painter or something else creative. Jessa does best when she's not at a 9-5 job.
Where We Left Her:Surprisingly, the girl who seemed to have it the most together at the end was Shoshanna, who had a new career, a new fiance, and was happy to cut ties with her toxic friends. (Or at least these toxic friends — she seemed desperate to reconnect with her former college besties, who didn't seem too loyal, either.)
What's In Her Future:After a wedding that most definitely gets written up in the New York Times' Vows section, Shosh and her hubby will work their way up the ladder in their chosen careers before moving to Westchester and starting a family. Don't worry — she's definitely not giving up her career and will eventually own her own communications firm.
Where We Left Him:His grand gesture to Hannah — offering to raise her son as his own — backfired, and while good-intentioned, it also meant he left Jessa and hurt her in the process.
What's In His Future:Adam's intentions were misplaced, but caring for his niece made him realize he did want to become a father. And thanks to two dysfunctional but passionate relationships (with Hannah and Jessa), his next one will be his healthiest yet and turn him into the hipster Brooklyn dad he's so ready to be. No, there's no chance he'll reconnect with Hannah or Jessa (romantically, at least), but if they do run into each other someday it won't be super awkward, either.
Where We Left Him:After finally meeting a girl who accepted his quirks and shared some of his weird passions, it seemed that Ray was finally on his way to happiness.
What's In His Future:Ray and Abigail (Aidy Bryant) eventually move in together, becoming local activists and ultimately pursuing local politics. They're community organizers and are trying to open a new food co-op in their neighborhood.
Where We Left Him:Hannah's career renaissance seemed to inspire Elijah to take his acting seriously again, and made it through multiple rounds of callbacks for a role in a musical adaptation of White Men Can't Jump.
What's In His Future:Naturally, the show closes after just 30 performances (because that is a terrible idea for a musical), but it helps energize Elijah -- leading him to become a working Broadway actor. He's not a star like ex Dill (Corey Stoll) -- because, come on, that's not going to last -- but he's successful and finds a partner in a man who has no interest in the public eye. Think Julianna Margulies' hot lawyer husband. Just a sexy civilian supporting his actor partner.
