Princess Leia Organa wins the Star Wars popularity contest. That should come as no surprise to anyone, but it's nice to have the evidence in black and white. As for the loser, there's a twist.
A December poll from Morning Consult asked 2,200 folks about their opinions on Star Wars movies, then cross-tabulated that with their demographics and political preferences. We'll be pulling details out of this poll for weeks; but for now, let's concentrate on the characters.
SEE ALSO:Sorry, Star Wars fans, you're not getting that Old Republic trilogy you wantedThe poll asked respondents their opinions on 25 major characters from the saga. Leia came out on top with a 73% favorability rating -- although Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, Yoda and R2-D2 were all within 2% of her, which happens to be the poll's margin of error.
Anakin Skywalker has a 55% favorability rating, while Darth Vader has 49%. That appears to be the first evidence we've ever found that slaughtering Jedi children, torturing your daughter, and cutting off your son's hand will only cost you a 6% dip in the polls.
But most interesting -- and unexpected -- is what's going on at the other end of the poll. None of the new trilogy's main characters cracked the 40% favorability mark. And one of them has the distinction of being the least popular Star Wars character of all.
That's right, there's someone in the galaxy far, far away less popular than Jar Jar Binks. Quite a few, actually.
Now that the people who watched the prequels as kids are all grown up, Jar Jar's reputation seems to have undergone a certain rehabilitation: he's at a relatively respectable 37% favorability, just below Rey and just above Samuel L Jackson's Mace Windu.

So who actually is the least popular character in the Star Wars canon, at least among the 25 majors listed by Morning Consult? Step forward, Supreme Leader Snoke.
Snoke, the villain of the new trilogy, has a 26% favorability rating. That's lower even than the humdrum villain of Attack of the Clones, Count Dooku (on 27%) and, amazingly, lower than Donald Trump (whose favorability hit a new low of 32% in this week's Pew poll).
The Trump comparison seems appropriate when you consider how Snoke is about to appear in the second movie of the sequel trilogy, The Last Jedi.
According to toys released in advance of the movie, as well as glimpses from the trailers, Snoke appears in a Trump-esque gold bathrobe. Now we're seeing him for the first time in person, as opposed to via hologram, we can also see that he has rather familiar eyes and bushy orange eyebrows.
Given all that, we doubt there'll be much of a surge in popular support for Snoke following The Last Jedi's release on December 15. In an interview with Mashable, director Rian Johnson denied the Trump comparison, describing the Supreme Leader as simply an "ugly mofo with questionable choices in loungewear."
Congratulations, Jar Jar Binks -- you may have ruined a childhood or two, but you're certainly a snappier dresser than the most totally evil being in the galaxy.
