Frozen 2continues to make all the money.
The current weekend sees Disney Animation's latest crossing $1 billion at the global box office, making it the Disney label's third release to reach that milestone. Frozen 2now joins Disney Animation's fellow billion dollar earners Zootopiaand the original Frozen.
The long-awaited sequel hit theaters in the U.S. on Nov. 22, and has so far earned $366.5 million domestically. The other roughly $666 million in foreign ticket sales, with China ($104.4 million), South Korea ($75.4 million), and Japan ($55.2 million) leading the way in overseas markets.
The current totals establish Frozen 2as the 11th highest-earning animated film of all time in the U.S., a ranking that's likely to improve even more in the coming weeks. With $366.5 earned so far domestically, Frozen 2 is just a couple million shy of the 9th and 10th positions, currently held by The Secret Life of Petsand Despicable Me 2, respectively.
Of course, box office records tend to get a little silly at this level. We're talking about the rankings of animatedmovies, and onlyin the U.S. That's not to suggest Frozen 2is anything less than successful, but it's important to keep the big picture in mind.
That picture looks especially good for Disney. Set aside the records: Frozen 2crossing the billion-dollar mark makes it the studio's sixthmovie to pull off that feat in 2019. Aladdin, Toy Story 4, Captain Marvel, The Lion King, and Avengers: Endgameall crossed that milestone. So did Spider-Man: Far From Home, a Marvel co-production with Sony.
SEE ALSO:'Frozen 2' spins a darker, more grown-up fairy taleIn fact, the only billion-dollar movie of 2019 that Disney has no connection to whatsoever is Joker, with $1.05 billion earned worldwide. Every other billion-dollar movie of 2019 is either from Disney or, in the case of Spider-Man, has a Disney connection.
Thatis a wild stat. Whatever Disney's doing with its various franchises, it's clearly working for a wide range of audiences.
